This work is a motif-index of ogre and devil stories. The first part (pp. 23-195) is devoted to die Riesen and the second part (pp. 196-288) to der riesische Teufel. The fist part consists of 78 motivs, the second 73. Roughly speaking, these are types. For each type references are given by geographic location (see maps, pp. 13-14). The bibliography is on pp. 15-22.

"Each variant...is presented with information on 1)the title of the folktale; 2) provenance; 3) original manuscript; 4) tradition carrier (informant); 5) recorder and year of recording; 6) printed edition"--introduction. Following A-th very closelym, the index includes an appendix listing those types that do not fit the international system. There are about 30 of these. Also, following each major section of tales (animal tales, ordinary tales, etc.) there are lists of tales without A-Th numbers. "The aitiological legends have been inserted following the legendary folktales and arranged in accordance with Verzeichnis der finnischen Ursprungssagen FFC no. 8"--introduction. Under each type, variants are listed geographically. There are indexes by collector and locale. A comprehensive bibliography for Norwegian reseach into folktales is included and is divided into various sections such as printed folktale editions and newspapers. Abbreviations used in the type index: pp. 16-17. The introduction gives a brief history of Norwegian tale cataloging and collecting.

Haring takes his lead from Propp and not Aarne-Thompson, thus giving a structuralist classification. His work is also based on Denise Paulme's "Morphologie de Contes Africain," Cahiers d'Etude Africaines, 12(1972), pp. 131-163. An extensive introduction (pp. 7-61) discusses the rationale for such an approach and describes the Malagasy tale corpus. An outline of the classification is found on pp. 63-75. Tables providing coordination with A-Th and the motif-index (pp. 485-505) conclude the index. For each tale listed, a title with bibliographic references is given, followed by a plot summary using structuralist principles. Standard motif and type numbers are included in the body of the text, as appropriate. Daniel J. Crowley's "Haring's Herring: Theoretical Implications of the Malagasy Tale Index," Journal of Folklore Research, 23(1986), pp. 43-51, is not quite as critical as its title suggests. Crowley compares Haring's index to several others and indicates where they overlap.

Although dealing specifically with Norwegian legends, this work proposes a universal list of legends. Christiansen felt that superimposing his numbers on the type-index would be detrimental so he begins at number 3000. Each type is given a title and number, followed by brief motif analysis, bibliographic references and content summary. The bibliography only lists those sources that have beeen consulted repeatedly. References to types are divided into regions of Norway. He divides legends into eight major categories: 3000-3025, The Black Book of Magic. The Experts; 3030-3080, Witches and Witchcraft; 4000-4050, Legends of the Human Soul, of Ghosts and Revenants; 4050-4090; Spirits of Rivers, Lakes and the Sea; 5000-5050, Trolls and Giants; 5050-6070, the Fairies; 7000-7020, Domestic Spirits Nisse, Haugetusse, Tusse, Gobonden; 7025-8025, Local Legends of Places, Events and Persons. One of the main bibliographies for the history of medicine. Wellcome bibliography for the history of medicine ceased production as of July 2004 and the last monthly list was created at the beginning of July 2004. It started in 1954 as a printed bibliography of periodical articles on the history of medicine and allied sciences, and in 1991 became available online. Articles are available for view in the Library unless otherwise stated. BMJ obituaries were not generally included in Wellcome bibliography, but citations to them exist in the Library catalogue (from 1/6/1993). Wellcome bibliography archive files will continue to be available via the Wellcome Library website, as will the entries created in the Library catalogue.
Bibliographic citations with subject indexing to the holdings of largest medical library in the late nineteenth century. Describes books, journal articles, dissertations, pamphlets, reports, newspaper clippings, case studies, obituary notices, letters, portraits, as well as rare books and manuscripts in many languages, ranging in date from 1400s to 1950.
