May 13, 2008, Dempsey proposes 4 sources of metadata:

  1. Professional: The curatorial professions have made major investments in knowledge organization, through the development and application of cataloging rules, controlled vocabularies, authorities, gazetteers, and so on.
  2. Contributed: A major phenomenon of recent years has been the emergence of many sites which invite, aggregate and mine data contributed by users, and mobilize that data to rank, recommend and relate resources. This data includes tags, reviews, ratings, further details, and so on.
  3. Programmatically promoted: We are handling more digital materials, where it is possible to programmatically identify and promote metadata from resources themselves or groups of resources. We will also do more to mine collections, including collections of metadata, to discern pattern and relations. We are increasingly familiar with clustering, entity identification, automatic classification and other approaches.
  4. Intentional: I have used this term to refer to the data that we are collecting about use and usage. Pagerank is based on aggregate linking choices. Amazon recommendations are based on aggregate purchase choices.

The Community Data Portal (CDP) is a collection of earth science datasets from NCAR, UCAR, UOP, and participating organizations.

This ECAR research study was designed in collaboration with the Association of American Medical Colleges to analyze the practices and perspectives of IT organizations that support the academic research enterprise in medical schools and colleges. As the potential of biotechnology, proteomics, informatics, computational genomics, and other IT-intensive disciplines continue to offer breakthroughs in medicine, research in these fields requires greater and higher-level technology resources for infrastructure as well as IT support and services. The study is based on the results of a web-based survey sent to 125 medical schools and colleges in the United States, as well as qualitative interviews with leaders at 10 institutions. Respondents to the survey were predominantly chief information officers or other top administrators from 50 medical institutions, yielding a response rate of 39.7 percent. The findings contained in this report echo the results of the ECAR 2006 study, IT Engagement in Research: A Baseline Study, illustrating that the role and importance of IT in research is growing, while funding and budget decisions remain difficult. A corporate edition is available here.

And here's the final twist. As TV and the Internet converge into something generically known as broadband, the distinctions between the two will soon become nugatory from a consumer point of view. But will this resulting hybrid be more like TV, plus interactivity; or more like the Internet, plus TV? The distinction will be worth billions to whoever gets there first and organizes this mess in a fashion that's satisfying for consumers. The networks and cable companies, therefore, will need to move quickly to find a way to package the different streams - professional and user-made, broadcast and Internet - into a huge, interactive library, all easily and pleasingly accessible on demand and portable to whatever device people are overpaying for at the moment. Recognizing that this topic is of great interest to AAA members and larger anthropological communities, we will now feature an Open Access blog where members and non-members alike can offer both their reactions to the In Focus series and their general thoughts on the Open Access issue. To facilitate this discussion, full-text series articles will be available here Feb 1–March 1, after which all five articles will be archived at AnthroSource and AN Archives.

For the purpose of this study, “needs assessment” is defined as “a structured process of collecting and analyzing users’ assumptions and the necessary or desired services to satisfy specific audiences. Needs assessment justifies the development and provision of services and allows for effective distribution of resources to support the services.”

Michael Jensen is director of strategic Web communications for the National Academies.

In the Web 3.0 world, we will also start seeing heavily computed reputation-and-authority metrics, based on many of the kinds of elements now used, as well as on elements that can be computed only in an information-rich, user-engaged environment. Given the inevitable advances in technology, remarkable things are likely to happen. In a world of unlimited computer processing, Authority 3.0 will probably include (the list is long, which itself is a sign of how sophisticated our new authority makers will have to be):

  • Prestige of the publisher (if any).
  • Prestige of peer prereviewers (if any).
  • Prestige of commenters and other participants.
  • Percentage of a document quoted in other documents.
  • Raw links to the document.
  • Valued links, in which the values of the linker and all his or her other links are also considered.
  • Obvious attention: discussions in blogspace, comments in posts, reclarification, and continued discussion.
  • Nature of the language in comments: positive, negative, interconnective, expanded, clarified, reinterpreted.
  • Quality of the context: What else is on the site that holds the document, and what's its authority status?
  • Percentage of phrases that are valued by a disciplinary community.
  • Quality of author's institutional affiliation(s).
  • Significance of author's other work.
  • Amount of author's participation in other valued projects, as commenter, editor, etc.
  • Reference network: the significance rating of all the texts the author has touched, viewed, read.
  • Length of time a document has existed.
  • Inclusion of a document in lists of "best of," in syllabi, indexes, and other human-selected distillations.
  • Types of tags assigned to it, the terms used, the authority of the taggers, the authority of the tagging system.

None of those measures could be computed reasonably by human beings. They differ from current models mostly by their feasible computability in a digital environment where all elements can be weighted and measured, and where digital interconnections provide computable context.

An Interactive Open Access Journal of the European Geosciences Union

In the first stage, papers that pass a rapid access peer-review are immediately published on the Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics Discussions (ACPD) website. They are then subject to Interactive Public Discussion, during which the referees' comments (anonymous or attributed), additional short comments by other members of the scientific community (attributed) and the authors' replies are also published in ACPD. In the second stage, the peer-review process is completed and, if accepted, the final revised papers are published in ACP. To ensure publication precedence for authors, and to provide a lasting record of scientific discussion, ACPD and ACP are both ISSN-registered, permanently archived and fully citable.

Libraries in the future will undertake local control, especially for long-term preservation and accessibility of digital as well as analog collections. Failure to embrace that role would cause libraries and librarians rapidly to lose relevance and value as Internet and other digital resources develop. Local control of collections is critical both to assure permanence and to provide a key degree of selectivity, which — contrary to the irrational exuberance of making everything available to everybody — is vital to providing service to communities of readers. Librarians need new tools, such as the LOCKSS system, to enable both persistence and selection of electronic information.

Example of backward citing references.

Reference linking is available for all SPIE Journal papers published since 1999. Each Journal abstract page includes the complete list of references from that paper in HTML, with citation links as applicable. In addition, forward linking (citing articles) is now supported. Only subscribers can access this feature. Links are also provided to INSPEC and MEDLINE records. Proceedings papers have assigned DOI numbers and thus may be linked from other sources in the technical literature. Outbound reference linking from SPIE Proceedings papers to references cited within the paper is planned for the future. SPIE is a member of CrossRef.

CrossRef Forward Reference Linking
The SPIE Digital Library now also includes full CrossRef forward reference linking. In the past, forward linking was limited to citing articles published on the Scitation platform. With CrossRef-supported forward reference linking, new SPIE articles are deposited and stored in the CrossRef system. When a new citation is deposited from any other journal, SPIE is notified and a link to the new article is created even if the article is not published on Scitation.

14 Sept 2007: Royal Society of Chemistry's Project Prospect wins the 2007 ALPSP/Charlesworth Award.

"This project sees the introduction of semantics into chemical science publishing. RSC Project Prospect journals incorporate standard metadata within the full text of their articles and combine this with an elegant and intuitive on screen manifestation of the advantages of including this metadata.

"As a result, sophisticated and effective searching of the literature is greatly improved and the value gained from reading each article is significantly enhanced. RSC Project Prospect is delightfully simple to use and its benefits to authors and readers are immediately obvious."

What Digital Imaging Is Not

Digital imaging technology is not simply another reformatting option in the preservation tool kit. Digital imaging involves transforming the very concept of format, not simply creating a faithful reproduction of a book, document, photograph, or map on a different medium. The power of digital enhancement, the possibilities for structured indexes, and the mathematics of compression and communication together fundamentally alter the concept of preservation in the digital world.

John Wilkin (U MIchigan) takes issue with his colleague's assertion, noting that the original finding from Making of America, "though no uses in print, many uses online" has morphed to the misleading "many online uses created many uses in print." Rather, Wilkin proposes "not that online access stimulates use of the print, but that some things that are online work better in print."

The center focuses on five thrust areas that are the pillars of an exciting future:

  • Cyberenvironments will give research communities the means to fully exploit the extraordinary resources available on the Internet (computing systems, data sources and stores, and tools).
  • NCSA's cyber-resources ensure that computing, data, and networking resources are available to solve the most demanding science and engineering problems and that the solutions are obtained in a timely manner.
  • Innovative systems research is exploring the path to petascale (and beyond) science and engineering.
  • Advanced visualization provides critical insights into complex systems and brings the thrill of scientific discovery to the public.
  • NCSA aims to bring cybereducation into the undergraduate and graduate classroom to prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers to effectively use the growing national cyberinfrastructure.

Overview article by Richard K. Johnson appearing in ARL: A Bimonthly Report on Research Library Issues and Actions from ARL, CNI, and SPARC, February 2007

Reviews the "sea change" in digitization of library collections fomented by Google Book Search and the Open Content Alliance.  Outlines principles and policies put forward by such agencies as the American Library Association, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Francophone National Libraries, the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, OCLC, the American Council of Learned Societies, and others.  Concludes with a "Negotiations Checklist" of issues to consider when entering an agreement involving digitization or other business exploitation of library collections including:  exclusivity; uses of the digital files; respect for the public domain and copyright; preservation; standards; and quid pro quo.

The criteria are based on monetary, scholarly and historical value; bibliographic control; frequency of use; physical condition; the existence of digital copies elsewhere; copyright status; and the appropriateness of digital reproductions for use and access.  Because selection criteria for access are often different from those for preservation, the Library has created a different set of selection criteria for each mission. Each approach focuses on all types of materials in the Library’s collections including but not limited to printed monographs and journals, manuscripts and archives, prints and photographs, and audiovisuals.

Digitization has the potential to transform scholarly use of data found in print statistical publications. While presenting images of statistical tables in a digital library environment may be desirable, the full potential of such material can be realized only if the resulting digital objects are easy to search and manipulate and are accompanied by sufficient metadata to support extraction of numbers from tables and comparison of numbers across tables.

The Framework is organized around indicators of goodness for four core entities:

* Collections (organized groups of objects)

* Objects (digital materials)

* Metadata (information related to objects)

* Projects (initiatives to create or manage collections)

Note that services have been deliberately excluded as out of scope. It is expected that if quality collections, objects, and metadata are created, it will be possible for any number of higher level services to make effective use of these entities.
