This is the topic for my Media Theory essay wherein I will explore Adorno and Horkheimer's assertions established in "The Culture Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception." Using this chapter as a foundation for contemporary theory, I will exaine how other theorists respond to the arguments presented by the two theorists and how the theories that emerge from The Dialectic of Enlightenment chapter are manifested in Los Angeles as a urban and cultural space.
This essay helps understand the phenomenon of the American Dream. It outlines specifically some of the arguments established in Jim Cullen’s book (see above), referring specifically to his explanation of the “California Dream,” one of the fantasies included under the topic of the American Dream. This is obviously useful to me in my exploration of Los Angeles as a cultural representation of this American ideology. The essay ultimately iterates the duplicitous quality of the California Dream, thereby highlighting the theme of conflict or binary thought that appears throughout Adorno’s theories and experience. The idea of dialectical thought emerges in this essay, which is a theme I may explore more carefully throughout my own examination of Adorno’s theories and influence.

This is the principal text upon which my paper revolves. It is the starting point for the theoretical arguments that shape my ideas about LA, the Culture Industry and how Capitalism has ultimately subverted the American Dream. I will be examining, specifically, the chapter entitled, “The Culture Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Decption.” The assertions made by Adorno and Horkheimer in their essay lay the foundation for subsequent theory that outlines the effects of Capitalism, the consumerism it generates and the results of the Entertainment industry in defining American identity. The points I examine within the specific context of how LA embodies these problems are taken initially from this text.

This account will serve to enhance my understanding of Adorno and his relationship to Los Angeles—his situation as a German exile during the World War II era and beyond. It will most likely appear in my conclusion: I would like to avoid overuse of direct subjectivity in the immediate context of my argument. Although, if any elements emerge that sustain the arguments established by Adorno’s work with Horkheimer in “The Culture Industry,” I will refer to this book in the critical part of my essay. It might also help to establish my initial portrayal of the intimacy of Adorno’s relationship to Los Angles.
This article focuses specifically on Adorno and his relationship to Los Angeles. In exploring the entries that appear in Minima Moralia, Israel explains the personal nature of Adorno’s theory, especially those thoughts that appear in “The Culture Industry.” Notes from this article will, like the thoughts expressed in Minima Moralia, probably appear in the concluding statements of my essay as they examine the more personal relationship Adorno has with Los Angeles. I do not want to over-emphasize the subjectivity of Adorno’s theories throughout my work—although they may be helpful in introducing the intimacy of Adorno’s response to Los Angeles and the Culture Industry it presents. This is an important essay as it reminds us that Adorno’s experience cannot be separated from his theories.

This article focuses largely on one of the themes established in Adorno and Horkheimer’s chapter which will emerge throughout my discussion—that of identity within the context of subjectivity and the American Dream. The article highlights how some of Adorno and Horkheimer’s arguments ultimately apply to Los Angeles and Film Noir. Though I may not ultimately cite the article within this particular essay, it does help broaden my understanding of the manifestations of Adorno and Horkheimer’s argument within the context of the Film Noir mode. Additionally, it helps contextualize this essay within the greater perspective of my thesis on Los Angeles and Film Noir, to which this paper will serve as a preliminary step in research and argumentation.
