Using PennTags to discover new posts of interest.

PennTags can be a very powerful discovery tool because its a collaborative repository of information created by the Penn Community. To discover new posts of interest or relevance you can do several things:

  • Follow a tag
Say that you are interested in XML. Seeing what other people are posting on PennTags using the tag XML will help you discover new and relevant posts. To follow a tag, either click on it at the bottom of a post or construct the appropriate URL as described below.
  • Follow an owner
When browsing PennTags, you'll likely find other owners posting similar resources to your own. To follow an owner, simply click on his or her name at the bottom of a post or construct the appropriate URL as described below. Sometimes at the bottom of a post you will also see an "and n other people" link (where n is a number). This means that more than one person has added that same item to PennTags. Following this link is a good way to identify additional owners who may have posts in your areas of interest.
  • Use related tags
If you tag a post apple you might also add ipod and itunes as additional tags to describe your post. These three tags would then be considered "related tags". On any page for a particular tag (e.g., http://tags.library.upenn.edu/tag/apple), you can see a list of other tags which are applied to posts tagged "apple" and the number of posts containing the two tags together. Use these related tags to discover new tags related to your interests and to focus or change the direction of your search. Clicking one of the related tags will take you to posts that contain both tags. For example, from http://tags.library.upenn.edu/tag/apple, click on ipod in the related tags list to see posts with both apple and ipod as tags.
