When Should I Use OVID Medline?

Use OVID Medline when you need to do a comprehensive search. The OVID system will suggest additional terms that you can include in your search query.
Use OVID Medline when you need to do a targeted search. The OVID system suggests and allows you to select more specific Medical Subject Headings and Subheading that can greatly improve specificity.

When Should I Use PubMed Plus?

Use PubMed if you need to run a quick search. PubMed immediately responds with results (some relevant, some not).
Use PubMed when you have having trouble finding enough articles. PubMed's "related articles" feature can help improve your results.
PubMed is also the best resource if you know the article that you need. Use the "Single Citation Matcher" to find a known article.
Because you will unlikely have access to OVID Medline once you leave Penn, it's important to get comfortable with the PubMed system.

What Other Resources Should I Consider Using?

The Cochrane Library provides access to "high-quality, independent evidence to inform healthcare decision-making."
Embase, similar to MEDLINE/PubMed, is produced in Europe. This database is especially strong in Drug Research occurring in other parts of the world.

Searching by Research Topic

SciFinder Scholar's research topic algorithm uses a thesaurus and natural language searching to search both Chemical Abstracts and MEDLINE. This means that you do not need to use truncation or Boolean operators in SciFinder. You can use operators if you want to, but there is NO truncation symbol for the database. SciFinder looks up your word in the thesaurus, finds all synonyms and other forms of the word, and performs the search on all possible options.
Follow these steps to perform a topic search in SciFinder.

Click on the Explore button from the initial Task menu.
Click the Research Topic button , in the left column of the next menu.
Type your topic in the text box. Remember that SciFinder uses NO truncation. You can combine your terms using Boolean operators or just write them out as a phrase. Click on the Filters button to automatically refine your search by author, company, document type, publication year, and language.

Helpful Hint: Instead of using Boolean operators, put a preposition, such as "of" between all your terms. The system will not know how to parse your statement, and it will give you all possible combinations of your search terms.
Select the combination or combinations of terms that best describe your topic by clicking in the check-box beside each applicable option. Click Get References.

Terminology Note: A "Concept" includes synonyms and other forms of the word, found in the CAS thesaurus. "Closely associated" terms are within five words of one another or in the title or the same index term.
Once you have some results from your topic search, there are many ways in which you can analyze or refine your hits. Please see Refining and Analyzing Lists of References for more information.

Includes the full text of the regularly updated systematic reviews of the effects of healthcare prepared by The Cochrane Collaboration. The reviews are presented in two types: 1) Complete reviews - Regularly updated Cochrane Reviews, prepared and maintained by Collaborative Review Groups 2) Protocols - Protocols for reviews currently being prepared (all include an expected date of completion). Protocols are the background, objectives and methods of reviews in preparation.

COCH is produced by the Cochrane Collaboration - an international network of individuals and institutions committed to preparing, maintaining, and disseminating systematic reviews of the effects of health care. In pursuing its aims, the Cochrane Collaboration is guided by six principles: collaboration, building on people's existing enthusiasm and interests, minimizing duplication of effort, avoidance of bias, keeping up to date, and ensuring access.

Reflecting the current practice in medicine to base clinical decisions on accumulated evidence from the primary medical literature, Ovid has created a collection of resources called Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews which is designed for use by clinicians, researchers and students. The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews is one of the databases in Ovid's evidence-based medicine collection, which also includes the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE) and Best Evidence (which consists of ACP Journal Club from the American College of Physicians-American Society for Internal Medicine [ACP-ASIM] and Evidence Based Medicine from the BMJ Publishing Group).

In Medline a limit to Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews will restrict your retrieval to those articles or studies that have been included by the Cochrane Collaboration when creating a Topic Review or articles that have been reviewed in the ACP Journal Club or BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine publications or in the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE). By their inclusion in these publications, these studies have met strict Evidence-Based Medicine criteria. Use this limit to narrow a large search to only those articles or studies which are considered "Evidence-Based" by experts and for which an article or topic review exists.

PubMed is the public access version to Medline, the premier database for biomedical literature. PubMedPlus is an enhanced version with links to full-text journals that the Penn Library subscribes to. Once the "Log-in" is completed, any full-text articles to which Penn Libraries subscribe will become available within the PubMed system by clicking on the Penn Text icon. The MEDLINE database is widely recognized as the premier source for bibliographic coverage of biomedical literature. The PubMed version of MEDLINE includes the PREMEDLINE database, which provides very current basic citati on information and abstracts before the full records are prepared and added to MEDLINE. New records are added to PREMEDLINE daily. In addition, for participating journals that are indexed selectively for MEDLINE, PubMed includes all articles from that journal, not just those that are included in MEDLINE. AMED (Allied and Complementary Medicine) Database
AMED (Allied and Complementary Medicine) database covers a selection of journals in complementary ("alternative") medicine (CAM), palliative care, and several other allied professions. AMED includes references to articles from over 500 journals, the majority of which are in English. A large number of these titles are not indexed by any other biomedical sources. In addition to the specialist journals on AMED's subjects, a number of important general journals are reviewed for relevant articles. Along with the basic bibliographic information, each record includes index terms using the AMED Thesaurus and an abstract summarizing the article being cited.

RefWorks - web-based bibliographic management tool
RefWorks allows users to create personal citation databases by importing references from online databases. RefWorks features also facilitate manuscript preparation, allowing for automatic formatting of the paper and the bibliography. RefWorks is similar in function to bibliographic management software products such as EndNote, Reference Manager, and ProCite, and citations from these programs can be easily imported into RefWorks.
