Prints & Photographs Online Catalog - Bain Collection (LOC)

The George Grantham Bain Collection represents the photographic files of one of America's earliest news picture agencies. The collection richly documents sports events, theater, celebrities, crime, strikes, disasters, political activities including the woman suffrage campaign, conventions and public celebrations. The photographs Bain produced and gathered for distribution through his news service were worldwide in their coverage, but there was a special emphasis on life in New York City. The bulk of the collection dates from the 1900s to the mid-1920s, but scattered images can be found as early as the 1860s and as late as the 1930s.

Lesbian Herstory Archives

"The Lesbian Herstory Archives of New York City, the largest and oldest Lesbian archive in the world, began in 1973 as an outgrowth of a Lesbian consciousness-raising group at the Gay Academic Union. The founders were concerned about the failure of mainstream publishers, libraries, archives, and research institutions to value Lesbian culture. It became obvious that the only way to insure the preservation of Lesbian culture and history was to establish an independent archives governed by Lesbians."

Broadcasting it : an encyclopaedia of homosexuality in film, radio and TV in the UK, 1923-1993 / Keith Howes ; foreword by Alan Bennett.

"If readers can get past the somewhat inaccurate title (there are many non-British listings in this work), they will have a hard time ever putting it down. There are over 3,000 entries covering characters in fiction, real-life people, professions, character names, abstract subjects, film and program titles, and much more in the realm of English-language cinema, television, and radio (primarily from Britain, but also from the United States and Australia). There are numerous cross-references, which will keep the reader thumbing though, looking up favorite TV shows, movies, actors, and situations for hours at a time. The author himself justly proclaims in the preface: "But, for now, rejoice! This is homosexuality run amok through Britain's lounges, parlours and dining-rooms." Strongly recommended for large academic and public libraries." (Library Journal, 4/1/94, Vol. 119 Issue 6, p90)
Images in the dark : an encyclopedia of gay and lesbian film and video / Raymond Murray.

"Containing information on more than 3000 films, this encyclopedia will become a classic source of information on legitimate (i.e., nonpornographic) gay and lesbian film and video. Listing films from around the world throughout the medium's history, the book documents efforts by individuals who either openly or discreetly produced films with gay or lesbian themes or portrayed gay or lesbian characters, as well as gays and lesbians who portrayed straight characters. For each personality a brief biography is given, usually a photo, and a list of films associated with the individual. There are separate sections for directors, independent filmmakers, actors/actresses, gay icons, writers, artists, dancers, and composers. There are also listings and descriptions of films within the categories "queer" (of interest to gays, lesbians, and bisexuals), "lesbian," "gay," and "transgender" as well as a section on films with camp attraction or content. The film summaries and subject introductions are extremely well written, the book as a whole is well organized and indexed, and the wealth of information is accurate and up to date. For the film and video (all entries note whether the film has been released on video) collector (including AV librarians), this will be an important source of information; for the curious, it will be an eye-opener. Appropriate for all libraries and all readers." (Library Journal, 3/15/95, Vol. 120 Issue 5, p61)

"Includes straight people popular in gay culture. Murray's emphasis is on American and English films, although he does have selective coverage of European and Asian cinema. Films included in the book must be at least 60 minutes in length and have "a gay theme that is relatively evident." [...] Murray includes both Hollywood and underground films in his book." (Booklist, 3/1/94, Vol. 90 Issue 13, p1290)

Bent lens : a world guide to gay & lesbian film / [edited] by Lisa Daniel & Claire Jackson.

"Spanning gay and lesbian filmmaking from 1914 through present day, The Bent Lens showcases 2300 titles from 45 countries, including feature films, documentaries and short films. In addition to a synopsis of each film, other details included are cast, writer, director, genre, year of release, running time and even distributor contact details. All films are listed in an easy-to-read A-Z format, but each film is also indexed by country, director and genre. The Bent Lens: 2nd Edition also includes essays from experts Judith Halberstam, Barbara Hammer, Helen Hok-Sze Leung and Daniel Mudie Cunningham exploring gay and lesbian film traditions and how gay identity is viewed in Western and non-Western cultures. And finally, this remarkable guide includes a complete listing of gay and lesbian film festivals around the world, making The Bent Lens a must for all film and video aficionados." (from the book's description)
Gays and lesbians in mainstream cinema : plots, critiques, casts and credits for 272 theatrical and made-for-television Hollywood releases / by James Robert Parish.

"With the recent explosion of gay cinema, Parish (Prostitution in Hollywood Films , McFarland, 1992) provides a good starting point for research. Focusing on Hollywood and made-for-TV releases, his well-indexed work includes complete cast and character lists, production information, brief film synopses, and excerpted criticism relating to gay themes and/or characters. Browsers will also find fascinating trivia in almost every entry. Although genre devotees will notice a few absences (e.g., Bloodbrothers , 1978), Parish's work serves as an excellent companion volume to Vito Russo's seminal Celluloid Closet (HarperCollins, 1987. rev. ed.), which excludes made-for-TV's but is international in scope. Highly recommended for all film and gay studies collections." (Library Journal, 11/1/93, Vol. 118 Issue 18, p78)
Reel women : pioneers of the cinema, 1896 to the present / Ally Acker ; foreword by Judith Crist ; afterword by Marc Wanamaker.

"A celebration of women's behind-the-scenes contributions to film. Divided into 13 main sections relating to directors, producers, writers, film editors, animators, stunt women, foreign notables, etc. Sketches contain filmographies and emphasize career accomplishments (and sometimes hurdles). Select bibliography; index of names, titles, and topics." (Balay, Guide to reference books, 11th ed, 1996)

"Writer/producer/director Acker's volume capably fills a surprisingly neglected gap in the film field by profiling more than 120 women directors, writers, producers, editors, stuntpersons, etc., who worked or are working in the U.S. film industry. Coverage is from the 19th century to the present day. Each entry includes a biographical sketch, emphasizing interview quotes, and filmographies (some selective). Acker wisely avoids any critical analyses of her subjects' films, and should be commended for her accuracy. Her resource is more compact, comprehensive, and useful (while more pricey) than works such as Louise Heck-Rabi's Women Filmmakers (Scarecrow, 1984)." (Library Journal, 4/15/91, Vol. 116 Issue 7, p94)

Women film directors : an international bio-critical dictionary / Gwendolyn Audrey Foster.

"This important work compiles a significant amount of otherwise difficult-to-find information on women filmmakers working in all countries and all contexts, whether mainstream, independent, or experimental/avante-garde. The introduction, which gives generous consideration to a wide range of scholarly contributions, is an excellent synthesis of writing in English on women directors. Following are alphabetical entries of over 200 bibliographic references to interviews and filmographies that would have been more useful with the inclusion of running time, place, and production company. The considerable amount of critical commentary that Foster (English, Univ. of Nebraska) includes is an amalgam of secondary-source opinion and Foster's own viewing of a wide sampling of the films. The only other reference work in this area is The Women's Companion to International Film (LJ 10/1/94), which contains shorter entries on a wider range of subjects. Public and academic libraries with any interest in film will want to acquire both titles, as they will appeal to all types of readers." (Library Journal, 10/15/95, Vol. 120 Issue 17, p54)
Encyclopedic dictionary of women in early American films, 1895-1930 / Denise Lowe.

"Lowe's appealing work profiles the careers of nearly 300 women active in silent film, mostly as performers. Entries have biographical information, film credits, and, often, a still of the biographee. A few subject entries dot the text, some on unusual topics--e.g., "suffrage films." The work's unique scope--women from any aspect of the early history of the film industry--fills a vacancy in the literature at a time when interest in silent film is growing. For deeper coverage of about 50 early figures, readers may want to consult Ally Acker's Reel Women: Pioneers of the Cinema 1896 to the Present (1991). The appendixes of Lowe's work often provide arcane information difficult to find elsewhere: which silent film actress had the longest careers, which were WAMPA (Western Associated Motion Picture Advertisers) baby stars and sisters, which are memorialized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, and which covered in the main text functioned behind the scenes in the film industry. Strengths of this title include its breadth and extent of coverage, illustrations, readable style, and unique information." (Choice, June 2005)
Feminist film theory : a reader / edited by Sue Thornham.

"The most important thing to say about Thornham's book is that it is one of the best edited collections of essays this reviewer has seen. Moving in roughly chronological order, Thornham includes selections from all the branches of feminist film criticism and by most of the important scholars in the field. The editor has chosen carefully, and the reader will take pleasure in revisiting the works of Jonhston, Mulvey, Doane, de Lauretis, Kuhn, Gledhill, Staiger, Modleski, hooks, and Butler, among others. Thornham introduces each section with an admirable summary of the historical context of each new movement. This collection will be widely circulated and used in countless classrooms over the coming years, as well it should be. All levels." (Choice, March 2000)
Women filmmakers & their films / with introductory essays by Gwendolyn Audrey Foster, Katrien Jacobs ; editor, Amy L. Unterburger.

An extensive biographical listing with critical/analytic commentary. "A welcome addition to the growing number of reference works on women in the film industry, this book is more general in scope than works confined to cinematic contributions by women during a particular era (e.g., Anthony Slide's The Silent Feminists: America's First Women Directors, CH, Jan'97) or their occupations in the industry (e.g., Women Writers: From Page to Screen, by Jill Rubinson Fenton et al., CH, Feb'91). Its breadth of scope and inclusion of essays about outstanding women filmmakers complement Ally Acker's Reel Women: Pioneers of the Cinema from 1896 to the Present (CH, Nov'91) and Gwendolyn Audrey Foster's Women Film Directors: An International Bio-critical Dictionary (CH, Apr'96). Entries include filmographies and literature by (and sometimes about) the women profiled. A list of films in which women filmmakers have had a major role has several entries and gives credits and references for further reading. Illu
