STATS: We Check Out the Numbers Behind the News

Since its founding in 1994, the non-profit, non-partisan Statistical Assessment Service (STATS) has become a much-valued resource on the use and abuse of science and statistics in the media. Our goals are to correct scientific misinformation in the media resulting from bad science, politics, or a simple lack of information or knowledge; and to act as a resource for journalists and policy makers on major scientific issues and controversies.

YBP Annual Book Price Update

"Each fall YBP publishes a report on price and output for new books published during our prior fiscal year. The data encompasses all new titles treated on the Approval Plan programs of YBP and of Lindsay & Croft, YBP's division in the United Kingdom, two offices which regularly profile, with book-in-hand, well over 65,000 distinct new titles annually. Since our Approval Plan programs are expressly designed to serve academic libraries, our data, which we have reported in a consistent way for over a dozen years, is a useful index to English-language publishing trends for scholarly, professional, and scientific books."

The Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care

The Dartmouth Atlas Project works to accurately describe how medical resources are distributed and used in the United States. The project offers comprehensive information and analysis about national, regional, and local markets, as well as individual hospitals and their affiliated physicians, in order to provide a basis for improving health and health systems. Through this analysis, the project has demonstrated glaring variations in how health care is delivered across the United States. The project is run by Center for the Evaluative Clinical Sciences at Dartmouth Medical School.

Quantitative and Geospatial Data

To support the research needs of Penn faculty, students and staff, the University of Pennsylvania Libraries acquire and subscribe to numerical and geospatial data resources in print and electronic formats. The library is a federal depository library, and receives large amounts of numerical data from agencies. Many of these resources are available on CD-ROM as well as on the web.

Does the Census Bureau have data on same-sex and unmarried-partners?

Same sex and unmarried partner household data are collected for those households where the householder and his or her partner are not married, but are living in a close personal relationship. An unmarried partner can be of the same sex or opposite sex of the householder.

An unmarried partner, in an unmarried partner household, is an adult who is unrelated to the householder, but shares living quarters and has a close personal relationship with the householder. This relationship is based on the self-identification of respondents.

Here are some sources for your use:

The American FactFinder contains two sources:

American Community Survey Table B11009, shows "Unmarried Partner Households by Sex of Partner."

Census 2000, Summary File (SF) 1 Table PCT14, "Unmarried Partner Households by Sex of Partner" is available for the nation, state, metropolitan statistical area, city/place, county, and various other geographies.

Additionally, same-sex unmarried partner household data were collected in the 1990 Census. The Technical Note on Same-Sex Unmarried Partner Data From the 1990 and 2000 Censuses provides guidance on comparing these data.

The Census 2000 special reports include:

Married-Couple and Unmarried Partner Households: 2000 and

Population and Housing Table, PHC-T-19, Hispanic Origin and Race of Coupled Households provides race and gender for unmarried partner households for the U.S.

The Census Bureau also collects data for same sex and unmarried partner households in ongoing survey programs, but does not regularly produce tabulations on this topic. For more information and special studies on the subjects of same gender couples and unmarried partner households based on the Census Bureau's survey programs, visit the Population Division Working Papers:

No. 34, Unbinding the Ties: Edit Effects of Marital Status on Same Gender Couples.

No. 35, Racial-Ethnic and Gender Differences in Returns to Cohabitation and Marriage: Evidence for the Current Population Survey.

No. 36, How Does POSSLQ Measure Up?
Investigating Community and Social Capital

Based on quantitative data used in Robert D. Putnam's book, Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community, the exercises on this Web site introduce you to an investigation of Putnam's claim about social change in America--that community is declining. Next, the exercises guide you in an investigation into why this is happening, whether it matters (so what), and what is to be done about it in the future. Overall, the exercises illustrate social science investigation and build your skills in data analysis.

However, it's neat.
