This collection, as seen through the eyes of the British diplomatic corps in Russia, provides a unique analysis of this "retro-reform" policy, including the increase of revolutionary agitation, deepening of conservatism and changes from agrarian to industrial society, and spread of pan-Slavism, both in the Russian Empire and Eastern Europe. The British Foreign Office Records of General Correspondence for Russia, in record class F.O. 65, is the basic collection of documents for studying Anglo-Russian relations during this period of fundamental change.

Samuel J. May Anti-Slavery Collection
Numbering over 10,000 titles, May's pamphlets and leaflets document the anti-slavery struggle at the local, regional, and national levels. Much of the May Anti-Slavery Collection was considered ephemeral or fugitive, and today many of these pamphlets are scarce. Sermons, position papers, offprints, local Anti-Slavery Society newsletters, poetry anthologies, freedmen's testimonies, broadsides, and Anti-Slavery Fair keepsakes all document the social and political implications of the abolitionist movement.

an image database about the period in the history of the United States immediately following World War I. The dates are approximately from the Armistice in November of 1918 to the collapse of hyper-inflation in mid-1920. Within these two dates the country witnessed--not so much in rapid succession as concurrently--a deadly flu epidemic, a strike wave of unparalled proportions, harsh suppression in some cases of those strikes, race riots, hyper-inflation, mass round-ups and deportations of foreign born citizens, expulsion of duely-elected officials from various offices in government, an incapacitated president, espionage laws, sedition laws and, of course, the advent of Prohibition and women's suffrage.

It was a time then of great upheaval, of right-thinking men--in the words of Walter Lippmann--"scared out of their wits". It is this fear that Red Scare seeks to document, not only as it related to what variously were called "Reds", "Anarchists", "Outside Foreign-Born Radical Agitators" and the like (though of course they play an important role here), but rather the whole breadth of experiences from this period of which the anti-red hysteria was one symptom. Indeed, it is because the anti-red hysteria was so emblematic of the time, that we use it in the context of this database as a short-hand way of expressing the whole period.

The Tribune is the largest African-American newspaper in the Philadelphia metropolitan area and has historically served the black residents of this area by covering crime, social events and sports, organizational and political meetings, and church news, as well as by offering editorials. It has also included advertisements for help wanted, houses for sale and for such items as beauty aids, medicines, and services oriented to the African-American community. Note that the Tribune was founded in 1884 but issues up to 1912 were destroyed in an accident--they are not accessible in any format.

African American Song
Online music listening service presenting audio history of African American music, including jazz, blues, gospel, ragtime, folk songs, and narratives, and other forms of African-American musical expression. The collection will eventually include 50,000 music tracks, many of them rare or never-before-published.

When complete, the collection will contain recordings by more than 2,300 performers spanning more than a hundred years including Ma Rainey, Lead Belly, Mahalia Jackson, Alberta Hunter, Tampa Red, William Bunk Johnson, Duke Ellington, Sophie Tucker, Joe Turner, T-Bone Walker, Sarah Vaughn, Cripple Clarence Lofton, Big Joe Williams, Memphis Jug Band, Roosevelt Sykes, Dizzy Gillespie, Chicago River Kings, Muddy Waters, Skip James, Blind Willie McTell, Lonnie Johnson, Alberta Jones, Johnny Shines, and Memphis Minnie, and more.

This first release offers access to over 16,000 track from Document Records--the worlds largest collection of rare and vintage blues, jazz, gospel, spiritual, boogie-woogie, and country recordings. From the earliest recordings of Afro-American music made in the late 19th century (including the Fisk Jubilee Singers, recorded at the turn of the century for Victor Records) to performances of the mid-1970s, in most instances the full recorded works of each artist are presented.

Eventually, African American Song will also deliver online access to the Alan Lomax Collection, a set of international field recordings by folklorist Alan Lomax from the 1930s through the 1960s, including the Jelly Roll Morton series (complete Library of Congress recordings), the Lead Belly series, and great artists and ensembles such as Son House, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Irma Thomas, Bessie Jones, Etta Baker, and the Georgia Sea Island Singers.
