The American National Biography (ANB) is the successor to The Dictionary of American Biography (DAB)(1926-1937). As such, it is a source of biographical information on Americans of significance, both American and significance broadly defined. The one fast rule for inclusion is that the person must have died before 1996.
The American National Biography (ANB) is a source of biographical information on Americans of significance. The one fast rule for inclusion is that the person must have died before 1996. Content attempts to represents wormen and minority groups of all sorts. Each article ends with a bibliography of primary and secondary sources about the person covered and location information for relevant manuscripts.
To browse by profession (health):
  • Go to the 'Occupations & Realms of Renown' area on the front page of American National Biography and click on 'complete list.'
  • In the pop up box scroll to and click 'Health and Medicine.'
  • You will be given another list of specific health and related professions; click on the one in which you are interested.
  • The occupation you chose will be placed in the ANB search interfact. You can now run a search for everyone in the database that fits that profession or limit your search further with keywords or date ranges.

Seeking broader coverage than the DAB and cognizant of changes in focus in the study of history, many more women, people of color, and religious minorities are included here. Over 6,000 scholars contributed nearly 17,500 biographies of between 750 and 7,500 words. For each a standard format was followed beginning with a chronological description of the person's life and ending with an evaluation of the person's contemporary significance. Importantly, the each article ends with a bibliography of primary and secondary sources about the entry and location of relevant manuscripts. The online version of the ANB can be searched in several ways which make it in some ways more flexible than the print version. It can be searched by entry name, key word, standardized occupation categories, gender, birthplace, date of birth or death and other elements of the entries.
